Wanda Kwiatkowska, a Polish citizen, fears a second Trump presidency could endanger Poland, especially given Trump’s refusal to explicitly back Ukraine in the U.S. presidential debate. In contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris praised U.S. and NATO support for Ukraine against Russia.

“Otherwise, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv with his eyes on the rest of Europe. Starting with Poland,” Harris warned, echoing Polish concerns about the conflict’s broader implications for the region. Poland’s proximity to Russia and Ukraine makes the war particularly significant for its 38 million residents.

Trump’s assertion that he could swiftly end the war was met with skepticism in Poland. Kwiatkowska called his comments “empty words,” while Sławomir Dębski, a professor of strategy, criticized Trump’s failure to affirm support for Ukraine’s victory. Dębski also noted that Putin’s conditions for negotiations—Ukraine ceding territory and avoiding NATO—make a peaceful resolution unlikely.

Poland’s support for Trump has diminished since his first presidency. Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government has expressed critical views of Trump, particularly due to his past praise of Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Putin’s ally in NATO. Many Poles now view Ukraine’s victory as crucial for their security, fearing further Russian aggression.
