The number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. climbed to a record 14 million in 2023, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. The report highlights a historic surge in migration during the Biden administration, particularly from countries outside Mexico, that helped fuel Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Pew found that from 2021 to 2023, the number of unauthorized immigrants from non-Mexican countries grew from 6.4 million to 9.7 million. Of the total 14 million, more than 12 million had either crossed illegally or overstayed visas, while another 2 million entered legally but were released while awaiting asylum or other rulings.

Analysts say Biden’s rollback of Trump-era restrictions, coupled with global instability, drove the increase. Nearly 82,000 migrants crossed the Darién Gap in August 2023 alone.

Pew also noted that 6 million of the undocumented had some protection from deportation in 2023, compared to just 500,000 in 2007. Early 2025 numbers showed the population still climbing, but dropping after Trump reinstated raids and ended protections.
