WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pentagon has unveiled a proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for 2027, marking a sharp increase in military spending and a major shift toward advanced technologies and force expansion.
According to Defense Department officials, the plan includes a new “presidential priorities” category allocating roughly $750 billion toward initiatives such as missile defense, drones, artificial intelligence, and strengthening the defense industrial base. The proposal represents a 42 percent increase from the previous year and would be the largest annual jump in defense spending since World War II.
Officials say the funding would support development of the “Golden Dome” missile defense system, expanded drone capabilities, and increased investment in space operations, including a near doubling of the Space Force budget. Additional funding includes $102 billion for aircraft procurement and research, about $75 billion for drone programs, and $65 billion for naval shipbuilding.
The plan also calls for growing the military by 44,000 service members and implementing pay raises ranging from 5 percent to 7 percent across ranks.
The proposal does not include funding for ongoing operations related to the Iran conflict, though supplemental requests between $80 billion and $100 billion are expected.
The budget request now heads to Congress, where lawmakers are expected to closely scrutinize its scale and priorities.
