Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s chief of staff, Joe Kasper, announced Friday that the Department of Defense (DOD) may use polygraph tests in a new investigation into recent leaks of sensitive information from the Pentagon.

The memo cited “recent unauthorized disclosures” involving communications within the Office of the Secretary of Defense but did not provide specific details. The announcement followed a post from Elon Musk, a top adviser to President Trump, who warned that individuals leaking “maliciously false information” would be identified and prosecuted.

The New York Times had earlier reported that Musk was set to receive a classified Pentagon briefing on U.S. war plans for China — a claim later denied by Trump. The memo called for support from the Defense Intelligence leadership to coordinate the probe across relevant DOD offices and federal partners.

The memo stated that polygraph testing would be conducted “in accordance with applicable law and policy” as part of the investigation.
