Washington, DC — A conservative organization founded by former Vice President Mike Pence is urging President Donald Trump to abandon his deal allowing Russian diesel into the United States, joining a growing group of Republicans questioning the administration’s sharp reversal on Russian energy policy.
Advancing American Freedom said the agreement would send money to Russian President Vladimir Putin while Moscow continues its war against Ukraine.
“The way to cheaper diesel is more American drilling and refining,” the group wrote in a letter to the administration. “Paying Putin blood money for fuel America already exports is wrong, illegal and stupid.”
Trump announced the deal with Putin last week as part of an effort to lower diesel prices ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The administration temporarily eased sanctions on Russian diesel, allowing shipments through April 2027.
Several Republican senators have also objected, arguing the arrangement may conflict with a 2022 law banning Russian energy imports and could undermine recently enacted sanctions designed to reduce Moscow’s war revenue.
Trump has defended the deal as necessary to lower costs for American consumers, farmers and truckers.
Energy analysts have questioned how much relief it will actually provide. Russia’s promised shipments represent a relatively small portion of U.S. diesel consumption, while the agreement could generate billions of dollars in additional revenue for Moscow.
