WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FBI has fired at least 10 additional employees who worked on the investigation into President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents, according to multiple reports citing people familiar with the matter.
The terminations involve agents connected to the Mar-a-Lago documents probe led by former Special Counsel Jack Smith. That investigation resulted in a 2023 indictment alleging Trump improperly retained classified records after leaving office and obstructed efforts to retrieve them. The case was later dropped after Trump won reelection in 2024, consistent with longstanding Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president.
The dismissals come under FBI Director Kash Patel, a Trump appointee who has overseen broader personnel changes at the bureau. The FBI Agents Association criticized the firings, saying they “weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce.”
Reports from CBS News and CNN indicated the employees were removed following revelations that the FBI, during the Biden administration, subpoenaed phone toll records of Patel and current White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles while they were private citizens. Patel has described those subpoenas as government overreach.
The FBI declined to comment publicly on the personnel moves.
