Washington, D.C. — Former President Barack Obama said he has intentionally limited how often he publicly criticizes President Donald Trump, arguing that more frequent commentary would lessen the impact of his voice.
In a recent interview, Obama explained that regularly attacking Trump could shift his role from a political leader to that of a media commentator. He pointed to figures like Jon Stewart as examples of those who engage in frequent criticism, adding that his own approach is more selective.
Since leaving office, Obama has periodically spoken out on issues including immigration enforcement and redistricting. Earlier this year, he criticized federal actions following a deadly incident involving immigration officers and raised concerns about partisan map-drawing in several states.
Obama also acknowledged challenges in today’s media environment, noting that many of his actions may go unnoticed unless they occur during major political moments such as elections or ballot campaigns.
Polling cited in the report shows Obama maintaining relatively strong approval ratings compared to other current and former presidents, while Trump’s approval ratings have fluctuated during his second term.
