WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nearly half of Americans say the term “racist” accurately describes President Donald Trump, according to a new national survey released this week.
The Economist/YouGov poll found that 47 percent of respondents believe the label fits Trump. Twenty-four percent said it does not describe him, while 29 percent reported having no opinion. The survey was conducted Feb. 13–16 among 1,682 adults and carries a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
Trump has faced repeated accusations of racism throughout his political career, particularly regarding comments about Black, Latino, and Asian communities. Earlier this month, Trump deleted a video from his social media account that included imagery of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama depicted as apes. Democrats condemned the post as racist. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) called it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”
In a separate recent survey from the Committee of 100 and the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center, 54 percent of respondents said Trump’s rhetoric about China negatively affected people of Chinese descent in the United States.
Public opinion on the issue remains sharply divided.
