The National Science Foundation, in collaboration with leading tech companies and nine federal agencies, announced the initiation of a pilot program for the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR). This program, part of President Biden’s AI executive order, aims to develop a shared AI research infrastructure. Key tech partners include Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and OpenAI. Federal agencies involved are the Department of Energy, NASA, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Patent and Trade Office, and the Department of Defense.
Katie Antypas, director at the National Science Foundation, emphasized the necessity of the NAIRR pilot to democratize AI resources, facilitating access for diverse communities. The program is designed to support AI research focusing on safety, security, healthcare, and sustainability. It includes four focus areas: NAIRR Open for open AI research, NAIRR Secure for privacy-sensitive projects, NAIRR Software for AI software interoperability, and NAIRR Classroom for educational outreach.
Initially, the pilot will support 25 to 50 research projects, with plans to expand up to 400 projects. Researchers can apply for access through a pilot portal, with a broader call for proposals expected in the spring. The pilot is set for a two-year duration, representing a significant step towards inclusive and responsible AI development.
