Rep. Nancy Mace’s (R-S.C.) Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act passed the House in a 274-145 vote on Thursday, with 61 Democrats joining Republicans in support. The bill deems undocumented immigrants who commit sex offenses or domestic violence as “inadmissible” and “deportable.”
Key Democrats, including Reps. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), and Mike Levin (D-Calif.), supported the measure. California, a major entry point for immigrants, saw broad representation among Democrats backing the legislation.
Originally introduced during the 118th Congress, the bill was sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee for review but did not advance. Mace emphasized that the legislation signals zero tolerance for violent offenders seeking sanctuary.
The bill follows Republicans’ recent success with the Laken Riley Act, mandating detention of migrants arrested for theft. The Senate’s stance on Mace’s bill remains uncertain.
