A Cuban woman says U.S. immigration officials deported her without notice, separating her from her infant daughter who has a medical condition and was still breastfeeding. Heidy Sanchez Tejeda, who came to the U.S. in 2019 and married a U.S. citizen, was deported after a routine ICE check-in in April.
According to Sanchez Tejeda, ICE gave her no choice about her baby’s fate and ordered the child to remain in Florida with her father. ICE has not commented on the incident.
Deportation czar Tom Homan said deportees now have the option to take children with them. But Sanchez Tejeda disputes this, saying she pleaded to stay with her baby.
Her attorney is seeking a humanitarian visa, citing the child’s health needs and emotional trauma. Critics argue the action mirrors past family separations under Trump and risks harm to U.S. citizens and children.
