A Michigan judge overturned a previous ruling on Saturday, allowing independent candidate Cornel West to appear on the state’s ballot. Judge James Robert Redford of the Michigan Court of Claims ordered the Michigan Bureau of Elections to qualify West and his running mate if they have enough valid signatures. The judge stated that the Michigan secretary of state and the Bureau of Elections director “misapplied the law” when disqualifying West over issues with notarizing his affidavit of identity (AOI). The court ruled that these AOI issues could not be used to exclude West from the ballot.
West celebrated the ruling, calling it both a legal and moral victory. He stressed that his campaign had submitted over 26,000 signatures, well above the required number. While West continues to secure ballot access in multiple states, his presidential bid remains a long shot, with around 1 percent support in most polls.
