Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) asked Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R) to start conversations with Democrats about bipartisan gun legislation, he told CNN on Thursday, two days after a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, left 19 children and two teachers dead and sparked renewed calls from Democrats for stricter gun control.

McConnell said he met with Cornyn Thursday morning and told him to work with Democratic Sens. Chris Murphy (Conn.) and Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) to find a compromise on legislation in response to the tragedy, CNN reported.

McConnell did not offer specifics on what such a bill should look like, instead saying he wanted Cornyn to take the lead on any legislation, according to CNN.

Cornyn said earlier on Thursday he would meet with Murphy—a lawmaker from the state where the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting took place a decade ago and who has since emerged as an outspoken advocate for gun control measures—to see if they could work together, according to CNN.

Cornyn said he was unsure of whether there would be enough support for a bill on stricter background checks or other gun control measures, but added the tragedy would hopefully provide a “new, greater sense of urgency.”
