Ramón Morales Reyes, a 54-year-old Milwaukee dishwasher and father of three U.S. citizens, was released from a Wisconsin jail Thursday after being falsely accused of threatening to assassinate Donald Trump.
The accusation, amplified in a viral post by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, included a photo of Reyes and an English-language threat letter. Authorities later determined the letter was forged by Demetric D. Scott, who is accused of assaulting Reyes in 2023 and hoped to discredit him as a witness in his upcoming trial.
Reyes, who speaks limited English, was arrested by ICE agents last month after dropping his child at school. He is seeking a U visa as a crime victim, but DHS still plans to pursue deportation over alleged previous unauthorized entries.
Released after posting $7,500 bond, Reyes was welcomed by family and local advocates. “He was relieved and very grateful,” said Voces de la Frontera director Christine Neumann-Ortiz.
Noem’s widely circulated post naming Reyes remains online.
