President Donald Trump could lower the 25% tariffs imposed Tuesday on Canada and Mexico, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a Fox Business interview, less than 18 hours after the duties took effect.

Lutnick stated that both Canadian and Mexican officials had been in discussions throughout the day, seeking to demonstrate stronger efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking into the U.S. “So I think [Trump] is going to work something out with them,” Lutnick said.

However, he clarified that there would be no pause in tariffs, but Trump is open to negotiating adjustments. “It’s not going to be a pause—none of that pause stuff,” he said, indicating that the administration may announce changes soon.

Lutnick also noted that China is unlikely to receive similar tariff relief, citing its subsidization of fentanyl production, which the administration blames for the opioid crisis in the U.S.
