On Sunday, Senator Lindsey Graham defended former President Donald Trump’s claims about migrant criminals but was fact-checked by CNN’s Jake Tapper. Trump had posted on social media that 13,000 convicted murderers entered the U.S. during Vice President Kamala Harris’s tenure as “border czar.” He blamed Harris for a surge in migrant crime, using statistics from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Graham repeated Trump’s claims on CNN’s State of the Union, alleging that 16,000 rapists and 13,000 murderers were released under Harris’s watch. Tapper, however, corrected Graham, explaining that those statistics spanned decades, including the Trump administration, and that many offenders were in prison, not released.
Graham highlighted the case of Laken Riley, a Georgia student killed by an illegal immigrant who was paroled due to lack of detention space. While Graham emphasized dangers posed by migrants, Tapper referenced studies showing no link between immigration and higher crime rates, pointing to the Brennan Center for Justice’s findings that immigration tends to reduce crime. Graham did not address these studies but continued to criticize Harris’s policies.
