Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday that she never witnessed signs of cognitive decline in former President Joe Biden, describing him as “always engaged” during her tenure. Speaking on CBS Mornings while promoting her new book Independent, Jean-Pierre reflected on her years serving alongside Biden and her decision to leave the Democratic Party earlier this year.
Jean-Pierre said she took questions about Biden’s mental acuity “incredibly seriously,” emphasizing that she saw him almost daily and traveled with him “for more than 95%” of his presidency. While acknowledging that Biden aged visibly, she insisted he remained mentally sharp and continued to ask “direct questions” in meetings and phone calls.
Her comments come as Biden’s health and communication abilities remain frequent topics of public debate. Jean-Pierre testified before the House Oversight Committee last month, stating she never observed changes in Biden’s competency during their 16-year acquaintance, though she admitted he was not “the same speaker” as in earlier years.
Jean-Pierre’s Independent book tour launched Monday in New York City, with upcoming stops in Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago. Vice President Kamala Harris is also on tour promoting her book 107 Days, urging Democrats to stay united during the ongoing government shutdown.
