A federal judge rejected former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows’ attempt to obtain records from the National Archives to aid his defense in the Georgia election case. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the court lacked the authority to take action against a federal agency, as the case was first filed in a local Washington court, which also did not have jurisdiction.
Meadows, charged with attempting to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results, sought records from his tenure as Trump’s chief of staff. However, Judge Kelly’s ruling indicated that neither the local nor federal court had the power to authorize such a request. Meadows faces a single count under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) after another count was dismissed. He, along with Donald Trump, has pleaded not guilty.
