U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi rejected motions to dismiss tax evasion charges against Hunter Biden, potentially leading to a high-profile trial as his father, President Joe Biden, seeks reelection. Hunter Biden, accused of dodging $1.4 million in taxes while indulging in a lavish lifestyle, has pleaded not guilty to the charges in Los Angeles. Despite defense arguments of political motivation and abnormal case handling, Scarsi found insufficient evidence to support these claims.

The decision follows a hearing where Scarsi, appointed by Donald Trump, expressed skepticism towards the defense. Additionally, Scarsi dismissed claims about the timing of charges, alleged leaks by IRS agents, and the special counsel’s appointment overseeing the case.

Hunter Biden also faces charges in Delaware for making false statements on a federal form to purchase a gun in 2018, during a time he has admitted to struggling with crack cocaine addiction. These charges are part of a comprehensive federal investigation initially poised to conclude with a plea deal, sparing Hunter Biden a trial. However, the proposed agreement fell through, and now both tax and gun charges are set for tentative trials in June.

If convicted of the tax charges, he faces up to 17 years in prison, adding another layer of scrutiny to the Biden family amidst the political battle of the 2024 presidential campaign.
