House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday clarified comments he made last week suggesting President Donald Trump was an FBI informant in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Speaking to reporters at the Capitol, Johnson said he may not have used “the right terminology.”
“I said FBI informant. I’m not sure — I wasn’t there. This isn’t my lane,” Johnson said. “President Trump was never a hindrance to the Epstein investigation. He was trying to assist in that.”
Johnson said his remarks were based on what a victims’ attorney had stated more than a decade ago, noting Trump removed Epstein from Mar-a-Lago and was described as willing to cooperate with law enforcement. A Johnson spokesperson also said the speaker was repeating those earlier claims rather than asserting Trump acted as an FBI source.
The clarification followed Johnson’s earlier statement accusing Democrats of having “impure motives” for seeking Justice Department records on Epstein. He added that the House Oversight Committee will visit the Epstein estate to review visitor logs as part of its ongoing probe.
Trump himself has not claimed to be an informant, and no evidence has surfaced to show formal cooperation with federal investigators.
