Washington, D.C. — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday accused the White House of attempting to “extort” $230 million from the Department of Justice as President Donald Trump pursues compensation related to past federal investigations.

Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” Jeffries criticized Trump for seeking a financial settlement tied to two probes: the special counsel investigation into the 2016 election and the classified documents case. He contrasted those efforts with economic pressures facing many Americans, arguing the administration’s priorities are misplaced.

Jeffries said Trump is focused on “enriching himself, his family and his friends” rather than addressing high costs of living, health care challenges, or immigration policy. He also accused the administration of fostering fear by deploying masked federal agents in U.S. communities, an apparent reference to recent immigration enforcement actions.

Trump’s reported request for $230 million would require involvement from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, both of whom previously served as Trump’s personal defense attorneys. According to the Hill, both officials signed agreements requiring them to recuse themselves for one year from matters involving the president, raising questions about how the request could be reviewed internally.

Jeffries said Democrats, amid a partial government shutdown, are prioritizing what he described as restoring ethical norms across government institutions, including Congress, the Supreme Court, and the executive branch. He also said House Democrats will not fast-track a Senate-passed funding bill without pushing for significant reforms at the Department of Homeland Security, including body cameras, limits on mask use, and judicial warrant requirements for immigration searches.
