House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) stated Sunday that no congressional Democrats are seeking to expand health care coverage to migrants without legal status. Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Jeffries said, “Federal law clearly prohibits the expenditure of taxpayer dollars to provide health care to undocumented immigrants. Period, full stop.”

The comments come as the Senate continues negotiations over competing funding proposals to avoid a government shutdown. The Republican plan would extend government funding through November 21, while the Democratic version includes a permanent extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies and the reversal of nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts.

Republican lawmakers have accused Democrats of trying to expand coverage to migrants, though Jeffries maintained their focus is on preserving ACA subsidies that expire this year. Without renewal, premiums for millions could rise in 2026.

According to the nonpartisan KFF, emergency Medicaid payments for migrants without legal status account for less than 1% of total Medicaid spending.

Jeffries added that Democrats are defending health care for “hard-working American taxpayers and middle-class Americans.”
