WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) responded sharply to President Donald Trump after he mocked her during a Fox News interview for citing the U.S. Constitution and criticizing his leadership. Appearing Monday on The Ingraham Angle, Trump referenced Omar while attacking Democrats, saying, “I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything — they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything. All they have is crime — and she comes in and tells us how to run our country.”
Trump went on to parody Omar’s remarks about the Constitution, adding, “The whole thing is crazy.” Omar replied on social platform X, writing, “Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the constitution says,” alongside a clip from the interview.
Omar, who fled Somalia’s civil war as a child and became a U.S. citizen at 17, has faced repeated personal attacks from Trump, who has previously suggested she should “go back” to Somalia. In September, he joked about asking the Somali president to “take her back,” to which he claimed the leader replied, “I don’t want her.” Despite these remarks, Omar has dismissed concerns over such rhetoric, saying she’s “not the 8-year-old who escaped war anymore.” The White House later responded to her retort with an image of Trump waving from a McDonald’s drive-thru, a moment from his campaign trail.
