Washington, D.C. — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) loudly interrupted President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address Tuesday night as he made remarks about immigration and Minnesota’s Somali community.
During a section of his speech focused on fraud and border policy, Trump alleged widespread corruption tied to members of Minnesota’s Somali community, referencing pandemic-era fraud schemes involving federally funded programs. He also criticized what he described as the importation of corruption through “unrestricted immigration.”
Omar responded by shouting from the House chamber, calling Trump a liar. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) also yelled toward the dais during the speech, with both lawmakers criticizing the administration’s immigration enforcement record.
Trump’s comments come after heightened scrutiny of fraud investigations in Minnesota and recent immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis. Democrats in attendance displayed protest signs and pins during the address.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was separately escorted from the chamber earlier in the evening after holding up a protest sign as Trump began speaking.
