House Speaker Mike Johnson announced a temporary funding agreement to keep the government running until Dec. 20. The measure excludes provisions from the SAVE Act, an election security proposal supported by former President Donald Trump. Johnson told House Republicans that the plan includes only necessary extensions to prevent a government shutdown, acknowledging it isn’t the preferred solution but calling it the “most prudent” option.
Johnson warned that a shutdown just weeks before a key election would be “political malpractice,” a sentiment echoed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who called it “politically beyond stupid.” Congress has limited time before funding expires on Sept. 30, but the measure is expected to pass with bipartisan support.
