WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan has formally introduced an impeachment article against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., accusing him of endangering public health and undermining medical research programs. According to reporting from NBC News, the move is widely expected to stall in the GOP-controlled House but signals growing Democratic frustration with Kennedy’s leadership at the agency.
Stevens, who is seeking Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, said she acted after hearing from pro-science advocates who argue that Kennedy’s policy changes have halted critical clinical trials and raised health care costs. She accused the secretary of spreading conspiracy theories and blocking research efforts, pointing to paused cancer trials affecting families in her district. Kennedy has pushed back, with an HHS spokesperson dismissing the impeachment effort as a partisan attempt to boost her Senate campaign.
The filing comes as another Michigan Democrat, Rep. Shri Thanedar, submitted impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following a report alleging he issued an unlawful kill order — a claim the White House denies. Meanwhile, Rep. Al Green of Texas has said he intends to file articles of impeachment against President Trump.
Although Democrats have voiced anger over Cabinet actions, party leaders acknowledge impeachment efforts are symbolic. Republicans hold a narrow House majority and are expected to quickly move to table any resolutions brought to the floor.
