A gun rights group is urging the Supreme Court to review a case challenging laws that bar 18-to-20-year-olds from obtaining handgun permits, citing a growing divide among federal appeals courts.
The case, Worth v. Jacobson, contests Minnesota’s handgun age restrictions. In July, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the law unconstitutional, arguing it lacked historical precedent and violated the Second Amendment. The ruling reversed a previous district court decision and allowed young adults in Minnesota to obtain carry permits.
The Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) and its allies are asking the Supreme Court to affirm the ruling and set a nationwide precedent. Similar cases have divided courts, with the 5th Circuit striking down federal age restrictions while the 3rd and 10th Circuits upheld them.
Gun control advocates warn that eliminating these age limits could increase gun violence, while FPC argues the Court must resolve legal uncertainty. If accepted, the case could reshape firearm regulations nationwide.
