Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is intensifying criticism of House Republican leadership, warning that the GOP could lose control of the chamber if the cost of living doesn’t drop soon. “I see Republicans losing the House if Americans are continuing to go paycheck-to-paycheck,” Greene told Semafor in an interview published Monday, saying voters will head into the midterms “looking through the lens of their bank account.”
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) pushed back, telling CNBC he’s “very bullish” about the GOP’s chances in 2026 and confident the party will “grow the House majority.” Johnson also defended efforts to pass a “clean” continuing resolution amid the ongoing government shutdown.
The dispute comes as household debt and credit card balances hit record highs, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Greene has repeatedly accused Johnson of failing to lead during the shutdown, urging him to recall the House to resolve the funding impasse.
The Georgia congresswoman also criticized the lack of GOP coordination on health care, saying there hasn’t been “one single GOP conference call” to address concerns about rising insurance premiums. “The Republican Party is failing,” Greene said.
