WASHINGTON, DC — A growing number of Republican senators are raising concerns about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s leadership, citing internal turmoil and clashes with senior military officials at the Pentagon.

Several GOP lawmakers said that Hegseth would likely struggle to win confirmation if nominated today. Concerns have intensified following the departures of top military leaders, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and Navy Secretary John Phelan.

Sen. Thom Tillis publicly criticized Hegseth’s management, saying he has shown a “failing grade” in handling the complexities of the Defense Department. Other Republicans expressed frustration over what they described as ongoing instability within senior leadership ranks.

Lawmakers also pointed to tensions between Hegseth and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, a figure with strong support on Capitol Hill. Some senators warned that continued personnel changes could weaken confidence in Pentagon leadership during a period of international conflict.

A Pentagon spokesperson defended the moves, stating that leadership changes are necessary to align with the administration’s priorities and reform efforts.

The criticism reflects broader unease among some Republicans, even as they continue to support U.S. military operations overseas. The situation remains fluid as Hegseth prepares to meet with congressional leaders this week.
