Attorney General Merrick Garland criticized Republicans for spreading conspiracy theories suggesting the Justice Department was involved in former President Trump’s conviction by a New York jury. Speaking before the House Judiciary Committee, Garland addressed these claims as part of a “long line of attacks” on the Justice Department, including threats to withhold federal funding over the verdict.
Garland emphasized the falsehood of claims that the DOJ controlled the state trial’s outcome, calling such conspiracy theories an attack on the judicial process. Despite accusations from Republicans, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts by a jury agreed upon by both prosecutors and Trump’s defense team.
Garland also noted the baseless claim from Trump that the DOJ authorized law enforcement to assassinate him during a search for classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, clarifying that the DOJ planned the search to avoid Trump being home and only permits deadly force if there is an imminent threat.
The attacks on the justice system have drawn condemnation from some Republicans, including John Bolton, who warned that questioning the integrity of the legal system benefits U.S. enemies.
