Democratic Sen. John Fetterman called the cases against Hunter Biden and Donald Trump “politically motivated” and suggested both deserve pardons. Speaking at the Capitol, Fetterman criticized the tax and gun charges against Biden and Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s case against Trump, describing both as “weaponized for political gain.”
Fetterman did not explicitly urge Biden to pardon Trump, emphasizing instead the need to avoid politicizing justice. Comparing the situation to a hypothetical red-state prosecution of Barack Obama, he warned of degrading public trust in institutions.
While supportive of Hunter Biden’s pardon, Fetterman clarified his opposition to pardoning Jan. 6-related crimes. He argued that only Trump’s New York trial, involving 34 felony fraud convictions, was politically driven, contrasting it with Capitol violence cases.
Fetterman also echoed President Biden’s criticism of “raw politics” in justice, as expressed in the statement announcing Hunter Biden’s pardon.
