WASHINGTON, DC — The FBI is investigating former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent over allegations he leaked classified information, according to reporting confirmed Wednesday. The probe was reportedly underway before Kent resigned earlier this week following disagreements over U.S. policy toward Iran.
Kent, who served as an aide to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, stepped down after publicly opposing U.S. military action, arguing Iran did not pose an imminent threat. His departure came shortly after he urged President Donald Trump to reconsider the administration’s approach to the Middle East conflict.
The FBI has not publicly commented on the investigation. However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Kent’s statements, while Trump told reporters he viewed Kent as “weak on security” following his remarks.
Kent also appeared in an interview with commentator Tucker Carlson, where he claimed Israel influenced the decision to strike Iran and warned the move would trigger retaliation. Administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, have maintained that military action was necessary due to an imminent threat posed by Tehran.
The investigation adds to ongoing tensions within national security circles over U.S. strategy toward Iran and internal disagreements among officials.
