Linda Sun, a former aide to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, was arrested by FBI officials on Tuesday alongside her husband, Chris Hu, on federal charges including visa fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Sun is accused of working on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the People’s Republic of China while serving in the New York State Executive Chamber as Deputy Chief of Staff. Her husband faces additional charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud and misuse of identification.

The arrest follows an FBI raid on Sun’s Long Island home in July, as part of an ongoing investigation into her activities. U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated that Sun’s alleged actions were part of an illicit scheme that enriched her family by millions of dollars while she ostensibly served the people of New York.

Sun previously held various roles under both Gov. Hochul and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, including Deputy Chief Diversity Officer and Director of Asian American Affairs. The arrests mark another high-profile scandal in New York politics, following the 2022 arrest of then-Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin on corruption charges.

Sun and Hu are set to be arraigned in federal court. Representatives for Gov. Hochul and former Gov. Cuomo have not commented on the arrests.
