WASHINGTON, D.C. — A former video editor for Infowars says he helped create misleading and fabricated content during his time working for Alex Jones, describing the outlet’s reporting as “nonsense” and “lies” in a recent interview.
Josh Owens, who worked for Infowars for four years before leaving in 2017, told NPR that he participated in staging a video falsely suggesting an ISIS operative had crossed into the United States from Mexico. According to Owens, the team found no evidence to support the claim and instead filmed a staged scene using a prop to simulate a beheading near a stream presented as the U.S. border.
Owens said the video quickly gained traction online, reaching about one million views within a day. He described a workplace culture focused on producing dramatic content rather than factual reporting, stating, “In Jones’s world, it was all about making things look cinematic.”
He also said his views began to shift over time, particularly after personal experiences that led him to question narratives he had helped promote. Owens now reflects on his role in spreading misinformation and discusses those experiences in a new memoir.
Infowars did not respond to requests for comment regarding the claims.
