WASHINGTON, D.C. — A bipartisan House Ethics Committee found that Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) committed multiple violations of House rules, potentially intensifying calls for her expulsion from Congress.
Following a lengthy hearing, the panel concluded that Cherfilus-McCormick violated ethics standards 25 times, with a recommendation for disciplinary action expected in the coming weeks. The findings center on allegations that she improperly received millions from her family’s healthcare business tied to a $5 million overpayment in COVID-19 relief funds.
Investigators say the funds were used to support her 2022 congressional campaign through a network of businesses and family members. The congresswoman has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to related federal charges, which include allegations of misusing relief funds for personal expenses.
Cherfilus-McCormick declined to testify during the ethics hearing, citing her Fifth Amendment rights. Her attorney criticized the proceedings, arguing she was denied a full opportunity to present evidence and witnesses.
The findings could influence a potential House vote on expulsion, adding pressure within a divided Democratic caucus ahead of upcoming elections. The case is expected to continue as legal proceedings move forward in federal court.
