WASHINGTON, D.C. — A pro-Iranian hacktivist group claims it has breached the personal data of FBI Director Kash Patel, potentially exposing sensitive information during heightened geopolitical tensions.
The group, known as Handala Hack Team, alleged it obtained emails, documents, and other confidential materials tied to Patel. The claim has not been independently verified, though a Department of Justice source told Reuters that Patel’s email account had been compromised.
According to reports, the hackers released images and a partial resume they claim belong to Patel, along with a file said to contain additional stolen data. Axios reported it could not confirm the authenticity of the materials.
The alleged breach follows recent FBI actions targeting the group, including the seizure of domains linked to its cyber operations. Handala said the move was retaliation for those actions, referencing a broader cyber conflict involving Iran and U.S. interests.
Security analysts caution that groups like Handala often exaggerate the scope of their attacks, making verification critical before assessing the impact.
Iran has frequently relied on proxy cyber groups to conduct operations, complicating attribution and increasing the risk of escalation in ongoing digital and geopolitical conflicts.
