The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday it will monitor polling sites in five California counties during the Nov. 4 vote on Proposition 50 — a closely watched ballot measure that could reshape the state’s congressional districts. The monitoring will take place in Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the effort will ensure “transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law,” citing statutes such as the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who will coordinate the effort in Los Angeles, emphasized the department’s commitment to maintaining election integrity.
Proposition 50 would allow California to redraw its congressional maps to favor Democrats, a move widely viewed as a response to President Trump’s push for GOP-friendly redistricting in several states.
State GOP Chair Corrin Rankin requested federal monitors after reports of irregularities in prior elections. California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber reassured voters that state and county officials will enforce election laws and ensure ballots are counted accurately.
