Washington, D.C. — Federal officials say an alleged letter attributed to Jeffrey Epstein and addressed to disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was fabricated, after it briefly appeared in a newly released tranche of Epstein-related documents. The Department of Justice said Tuesday that the FBI examined the letter at the time it surfaced and concluded it was not authentic.

According to the DOJ, investigators cited three specific pieces of evidence supporting the determination. First, handwriting analysis showed the writing did not match Epstein’s known handwriting style. Second, the envelope carried a northern Virginia postmark dated Aug. 13, 2019 — three days after Epstein died in a New York jail. Third, the return address failed to include Epstein’s required inmate number, a standard procedure for jail correspondence.

The letter, which referenced President Donald Trump and included graphic language, circulated widely online after being included in the document release. The DOJ emphasized that inclusion in a public records dump does not establish authenticity, warning that some released materials contain false or unverified claims.

Federal officials said the letter had been flagged as suspicious when it was originally received by jail staff and referred to the FBI. While one FBI form later referenced a request for handwriting analysis, the DOJ now says the conclusion that the letter was fake was based on the combined inconsistencies.

The department reaffirmed it will continue releasing Epstein-related files under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, while reviewing materials to protect victims and avoid spreading demonstrably false information.
