House Democrats will forgo their traditional Jan. 6 protests of GOP presidential wins, a move reflecting caution four years after the Capitol attack by Trump supporters seeking to overturn the 2020 election. Historically, Democrats have used the certification process to symbolically object to election laws or Electoral College outcomes. However, this year they aim to avoid any appearance of hypocrisy or parallels to the events of 2021.

Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Texas) emphasized that no one intends to question the 2024 election results. Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) reinforced this sentiment, stating, “Jan. 6 was so surreal and painful…nothing we would do would want to make us be like them.” Democrats plan to protest issues like gerrymandering through speeches but will not challenge President-elect Trump’s win, particularly as Vice President Harris has conceded.

Past protests, such as objections to Florida’s 2000 vote count and Ohio’s 2004 tally, were symbolic and did not aim to overturn results. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Fla.), who previously objected to Florida’s 2017 tally, highlighted the distinction between raising procedural concerns and Republicans’ attempts in 2021 to overturn Biden’s win.
