WASHINGTON — Republican Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday publicly criticized Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts for defending Tucker Carlson’s recent interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes.
Fuentes, who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and expressed antisemitic views, discussed “Christian nationalism” and Israel with Carlson in an interview that sparked bipartisan condemnation. Roberts responded online that Christians “can critique the state of Israel without being antisemitic,” while asserting the Heritage Foundation would not distance itself from Carlson.
Speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition summit in Las Vegas, Cruz said sitting silently beside someone who praises Adolf Hitler or speaks of defeating “global Jewry” is “cowardly” and “complicit in evil.” McConnell later wrote on X that conservatives “should feel no obligation to carry water for antisemites and apologists for America-hating autocrats.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also called Roberts’s comments “deeply disturbing” and urged conservatives to reject “the mainstreaming of hateful ideologies.”
Roberts’s remarks add to growing tension within the GOP as several recent incidents tied to antisemitism have drawn criticism from Jewish organizations and party leaders alike.
