Washington, D.C. — Sen. Cory Booker said Sunday that Democrats “desperately need new leadership” while highlighting several rising party figures he believes are connecting better with voters following the party’s disappointing 2024 election performance.
During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Booker praised Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, Texas state Rep. James Talarico, and former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper as Democratic leaders who are “stepping up” and building trust with voters. Booker argued the Democratic Party cannot succeed if voters do not trust party leadership and messaging.
The comments came days after the Democratic National Committee released a heavily criticized internal review of the party’s 2024 election losses. Some Democrats and political observers argued the report failed to fully explain what went wrong during the campaign cycle.
Booker also echoed a growing concern among Democrats that the party spends too much time focusing on opposition to President Donald Trump rather than presenting new ideas and policies. “You are not going to win this election just by what you’re against,” Booker said.
Talarico and Cooper are both expected to play major roles in competitive Senate races in Texas and North Carolina during the upcoming election cycle. Booker, who is considered a possible 2028 presidential contender, avoided directly answering questions about confidence in Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
