LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Gov. Joe Lombardo told voters that Nevada’s government has limited power to reduce grocery prices, inflation and other household costs, dismissing politicians who promise otherwise as offering “bullshit.”
The Republican governor made the remarks during a July event with veterans as he campaigns for reelection against Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford. Affordability is expected to dominate the closely contested race, particularly as Nevada struggles with expensive housing, child care and utilities.
Lombardo argued that national economic policy primarily determines inflation. His critics noted that he blamed former Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak for “Bidenflation” during the 2022 campaign but now separates his own administration from economic conditions under President Donald Trump.
The governor’s campaign cited nearly 100,000 new jobs, $6 billion in private investment and more than $1 billion committed to attainable housing. Critics counter that the housing initiative supports only about 5,000 homes and does little to address Nevada’s shortage of roughly 80,000 affordable units for low-income residents.
Lombardo also vetoed legislation addressing paid family leave, free school meals, prescription-drug prices and tenant protections. While governors cannot control national inflation, states can influence housing supply, taxation, utility regulation and targeted assistance.
Nevada’s affordability crisis leaves Lombardo defending both his limited-government argument and a record containing policy choices that affected household expenses.
