Washington, D.C. — Conservative organizations publicly opposing former President Donald Trump’s effort to lower prescription drug prices have received millions in funding from PhRMA, the pharmaceutical industry’s leading trade association, according to tax filings and public disclosures.

Earlier this month, more than 50 conservative and free-market groups sent a letter to Congress objecting to the administration’s move to pressure drugmakers into lowering U.S. prices by threatening tariffs. Of the 52 signatories, 19 received funding from PhRMA between 2019 and 2024. Records show the trade group distributed more than $9 million during that period to organizations that later signed the letter.

The messaging in the coalition’s letter closely mirrors PhRMA’s public arguments, warning that reducing domestic drug profits could undermine research and development, slow innovation, and increase reliance on countries such as China for new treatments.

PhRMA’s senior vice president of public affairs, Alex Schriver, said the organization engages with a wide array of groups and does not control their policy positions. Some recipients, including the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation and the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, emphasized they disclose funding sources and maintain independent research standards.
