Chinese hackers gained access to several U.S. Treasury Department workstations and unclassified documents by exploiting a third-party software provider, the agency disclosed. Details on the extent of the breach or specific documents accessed remain undisclosed. The department stated, “At this time there is no evidence indicating the threat actor has continued access to Treasury information.”
Treasury emphasized its commitment to cybersecurity, noting improvements over the past four years. The breach was discovered on Dec. 8 when software provider BeyondTrust identified that hackers had stolen a key enabling remote access to employee workstations. The compromised service has since been taken offline.
Assistant Treasury Secretary Aditi Hardikar informed the Senate Banking Committee that the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are investigating, attributing the attack to Chinese hackers. Further specifics were not provided.
