China’s Ministry of Commerce announced plans to file a legal case against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization (WTO) following President Trump’s decision to impose 10% tariffs on Chinese goods. In a statement, the ministry condemned the tariffs as a violation of WTO rules and pledged further countermeasures, though specifics were not provided.
Trump’s tariffs, which also include a 25% duty on Mexican and Canadian imports, were framed as a response to illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking. China rejected this justification, urging the U.S. to address its domestic issues instead of using tariffs as leverage.
While China seeks WTO intervention, the organization’s ability to resolve disputes remains weakened after Trump blocked judicial appointments during his first term. Despite this, China insists it will take steps to protect its economic interests.
