WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pentagon is asking Congress to formally approve renaming the Department of Defense to the “Department of War,” a proposal tied to an earlier executive order and carrying an estimated cost of more than $50 million.
According to reporting, the request would codify a change already partially implemented, with roughly $50 million spent so far on administrative updates and system changes. The Pentagon estimates the total cost at about $52.5 million, including thousands of required updates to federal statutes and internal systems.
President Donald Trump has argued the original “Department of War” title better reflects global realities and signals military strength. Supporters say the change is largely symbolic and would not significantly impact long-term defense spending.
However, critics question both the necessity and cost of the effort, especially given existing expenditures. Congressional approval is required to finalize the name change, as the current designation remains legally “Department of Defense.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other military officials are expected to address the proposal during upcoming budget hearings, where lawmakers will review the fiscal 2027 defense plan and broader spending priorities.
