Chief Justice John Roberts criticized elected officials for attempting to intimidate judges and disregarding court rulings in his year-end report, calling such actions “illegitimate activity” that undermines the rule of law. Without naming individuals, Roberts highlighted a case where a federal judge faced calls for impeachment over rulings in a high-profile matter.
“Attempts to intimidate judges for their rulings in cases are inappropriate and should be vigorously opposed,” Roberts wrote, warning that reckless criticism by public officials can provoke dangerous reactions.
Roberts, who has focused on preserving the judiciary’s independence during his tenure, expressed concern over rising public distrust in the Supreme Court and threats against judges, including online doxxing and violence. He noted that some judges now require full-time security and bulletproof vests.
Addressing criticism of judges based on their race, gender, or political affiliations, Roberts emphasized the judiciary’s duty to remain impartial despite dissatisfaction with rulings. He urged judges and elected officials to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities cooperatively to maintain public confidence.
