The attempted assassination of former President and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has intensified calls for Secret Service protection for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kennedy, a former Democratic candidate, has long sought protection from the Biden Administration’s Department of Homeland Security, citing threats and his family’s history in politics.
On Sunday, former U.S. Senator Scott Brown asserted that the attempt on Trump’s life highlights the danger to Kennedy. “It’s time for Biden to approve security for Mr. Kennedy immediately,” Brown stated on social media. The Catholic Action League also urged the Biden Administration to reverse its decision to deny Kennedy protection, referencing the Kennedy family’s history of political violence.
Kennedy, son of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, both assassinated, has been denied Secret Service protection multiple times. His campaign criticized the Biden Administration’s denial, calling it “appalling” and citing historical precedents for early protection.
Kennedy’s campaign argues that the decision is politically motivated, with the election now less than 120 days away and still no Secret Service coverage granted.
