California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill aimed at establishing safety regulations for large-scale AI models, citing potential harm to the state’s tech industry. The proposed legislation sought to require companies to test AI models and disclose safety measures, but Newsom expressed concerns it could stifle innovation. He noted that while well-intentioned, the bill applied stringent standards across all AI systems, regardless of their risk level.

The bill, authored by state Sen. Scott Weiner, was intended to mitigate risks posed by AI, including potential threats like hacking infrastructure or creating weapons. Weiner called the veto a setback but vowed to continue advocating for AI oversight. Critics of the bill, including tech giants and startups, argued it would stifle innovation and drive AI developers out of the state.

Newsom plans to collaborate with AI experts, including Fei-Fei Li, to develop alternative guardrails for AI models. Despite the veto, supporters believe the bill’s influence will inspire similar measures in other states.
