In his upcoming State of the Union address, President Joe Biden plans to direct the U.S. military to lead the creation of a port along Gaza’s Mediterranean coastline. This initiative aims to increase the flow of aid to Palestinian civilians. A senior administration official highlighted the insufficient speed and volume of aid reaching Gaza, committing to enhancing U.S. efforts in this area.

The envisioned port would facilitate the arrival of large ships loaded with essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine, responding to the dire needs of Gaza amidst ongoing military conflict and Israeli operations against Hamas attacks. This project, to be executed with allied and humanitarian collaboration, is expected to be planned and executed over several weeks, involving military forces either already present in the region or arriving shortly.

Officials clarified that the operation would not require U.S. military personnel to be deployed on the ground in Gaza. Instead, it involves offshore military activities without direct onshore engagement. Initial aid shipments are planned to be routed through Cyprus, with the U.S. working alongside the United Nations and other partners to distribute the supplies within Gaza.

This initiative, developed in close coordination with Israel, is part of Biden’s balanced approach following the Hamas attacks last October, which resulted in significant Israeli casualties. While affirming Israel’s right to self-defense and providing aid, Biden has urged greater efforts to protect civilians and facilitate aid access to Gaza, including recent airdrops of supplies.

The announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny over the U.S. response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, with increasing calls from Democrats for more effective measures to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza and pressures for a permanent cease-fire. Biden’s speech also follows a notable protest vote during Super Tuesday’s Democratic primaries, reflecting dissatisfaction with his handling of the conflict.
